What is Full Spectrum CBD?

Full spectrum CBD contains all the naturally occurring compounds found in the hemp plant, including:

  • Cannabinoids: CBD, CBG, CBN, and trace amounts of THC (below 0.05%)
  • Terpenes: Aromatic compounds that contribute to the plant's distinctive profile
  • Flavonoids: Naturally occurring plant compounds

What is Broad Spectrum CBD?

What the Process Actually Looks Like

The difference between full spectrum and broad spectrum is not just about THC. It is about the depth of processing applied to the extract, and what that processing removes or preserves.

Full spectrum extracts are produced to preserve the complete natural profile of the hemp plant. This includes the acidic cannabinoid precursors — CBDA and THCA — which are the raw forms of cannabinoids present in the fresh plant before any heat is applied. Full spectrum also retains the plant's natural waxes, most of the chlorophyll, and the full breadth of terpenes and flavonoids. The extract is, in essence, as close to the plant as the extraction method allows.

Broad spectrum extracts undergo additional refinement steps. The extract is typically dewaxed — a process that removes the plant waxes, giving the oil a cleaner, less viscous character. It is then decarboxylated: applying controlled heat converts the acidic precursor compounds (CBDA, THCA) into their neutral forms (CBD, THC). During this process, most of the chlorophyll is also removed, resulting in the typically lighter colour you will notice in broad spectrum oils. Finally, THC is reduced to below 0.05%.

The result is an extract that retains multiple cannabinoids and terpenes, but with a more refined and processed composition than a whole-plant extract.
